Firstly, Nalin Kumar thanked people of DK, district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai, Mangalore city Corporation authorities, legislators J R Lobo and Moideen Bava for their efforts in bringing great development in the cities and towns which made it easy to put Mangaluru on top. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu for putting Mangaluru on the list of smart cities.
Nalin defined how the smart city planning would look like, “The whole development operation will be conducted in two types; a macro level initiative through ‘pan-city planning’ and a micro level initiative through ‘area based planning’. Pan-city planning will take care of the roads, solid waste management, water and electricity supply while the area based planning will happen area wise where every house is benefitted through local development”.
Regarding the budget and time goal for the smart city, Nalin Kumar said that a total of Rs. 40,000 crores have been allocated for Mangaluru over the period of next 20 years. “Area-based development will take place by moving one step at a time and as this is a huge project, this will take some time. Our goal is to complete the projects which have already begun in the next five years and then go full swing with smart city development projects”, he added.
“Central Government has put in a lot of focus on the development of villages. Various projects have been taken up in rural areas to promote bus connectivity, English teaching schools with e-classes, identification and implementation of Special Agriculture Zones, revenue generation models and building village panchayat offices which will make it easy for the locals to get their legal work done”, mentioned Nalin.
Nalin also explained that the villages will have banks, solar powered street lights, health surveys conducted by various medical colleges of Mangaluru, major bus stands with clean toilet facilities and more smoke-free villages. Two underpasses near Padil, Panambur beach development, Pilikula Nisarga Dhama, Bunder port, women and children welfare programmes and school constructions both in rural and parts of urban areas will also be developed under the sanctioned amount.
